What: Sleepless in September presented by STREAT

Where: Everywhere, but the Main Event is at Melbourne Central

When: Friday September 25

Tickets: Free to register to start fundraising

Sleepless in September is STREAT’s annual campaign bringing together people and organisations to help stop youth homelessness. The campaign isn’t just about raising critical funds for local homeless youth projects, but also about bringing the issue home.

You can get involved by registering as either an individual or a team on their website and start raising money right away. Each year, hundreds of workplaces, schools and individuals come together to support this campaign.

STREAT encourages you to either host your own event or join them at Melbourne Central for the Main Event. The event has been growing every year and this year is shaping up to be one of the best yet!

We spoke to STREAT about what the project is all about and how it got started.

How did the project get started?

Sleepless was created and launched by a group of Bendigo Bank and STREAT staff in 2013 and has raised over $120,000.

What is STREAT seeking to achieve this year?

This year’s goal is to raise $100,000 and help fund STREAT’s programs that train and support over 150 disadvantaged youth each year – at a cost of over $300,000.

What are some of the activities you have planned for the main event?

The event will be held in the same location as in 2013 and 2014. It is called the link bridge that goes from the second floor of Melbourne Central over Lonsdale Street and into the new Emporium. It is an amazing space. You are inside, but it's a bit like being outside.

  • The School of Life will again lead a meaningful conversation about life and living in our communities today.

  • We'll be creating a book called 'STREAT Dreams' and we'd love you to enter something thoughtful in it. Last year's book (Home STREAT Home) will be there too.

  • A "Pillowcase of Dreams" craft and art and stories workshop with Matthew Butler founder of the world famous Zaishu organisation.

  • Dr. Kate Barrelle will host a discussion on 'The Meaning of Dreams'.

  • Fantastic local and STREAT musicians will play special sets during the night.
